Why a price per kW is misleading

Solar is quoted per kW because it is easy to compare. The trouble is that per-kW pricing implies the only variable is size, and it is not. Two 10 kW systems on two roofs a street apart can differ substantially in cost for entirely legitimate reasons.

What actually drives the number

1. System size

The largest single factor, and the one people focus on. Cost per kW usually falls slightly as size rises, because fixed costs spread.

2. Module and inverter selection

The widest quality range in the whole system, and the least visible after installation. Efficiency, warranty terms and the manufacturer’s actual presence in Pakistan for warranty support all differ.

3. Mounting structure

Flat roofs need ballasted or anchored frames; sloped roofs need different fixings; a shed roof may need structural attention first. Wind loading is a real design input, not a formality.

4. The existing electrical installation

Sometimes the distribution board, earthing or protection has to be brought up to standard before generation can be added safely. This is genuine work, and a quotation that omits it has not accounted for it.

5. Net metering

Adds design requirements, documentation and coordination.

6. Battery storage

The largest single addition, and the most dependent on what you actually need backed up. See hybrid and off-grid.

What a complete quotation itemises

A quotation you can actually compare has line items, not a single total against a system size. Look for:

  • Modules — make, model, wattage, quantity, and the warranty terms in writing.
  • Inverter — make, model, rating, and whether it is grid-tied or hybrid.
  • Mounting structure — material, type, and whether it is designed for the roof in question or taken from a catalogue.
  • DC and AC cabling — sizes and types, including whether DC cable is UV-rated.
  • Protection and isolation — DC and AC isolators, breakers, surge protection, and their ratings.
  • Earthing — electrode arrangement and bonding, stated explicitly rather than implied.
  • Civil and mechanical work — penetrations, waterproofing, containment, trenching.
  • Remedial electrical work — board upgrades or earthing corrections, included or explicitly excluded.
  • Net metering — documentation, application support, and what is excluded.
  • Testing, commissioning and documentation — including what you receive at handover.
  • Warranty on workmanship — separate from the manufacturer warranties, with its duration stated.

If a quotation is one line and a price, the scope has not been decided. It will be decided later, on site, by whoever is holding the money.

Where a cheaper quotation usually saves the money

Price differences between credible quotations are normally 10-25%, and explained by equipment and scope. Differences far larger than that are usually explained by one of these:

  • Thinner DC and AC cable than the run length justifies. Invisible on day one, paid for in losses and heat.
  • A lighter mounting structure, or one never checked against wind loading.
  • Cheap isolators and protection devices, which are also the components most likely to fail in a way that matters.
  • No earthing work, or earthing “included” as a length of wire rather than a designed arrangement.
  • The existing board left as found, whatever condition it is in.
  • No testing, no commissioning records, no documentation.
  • No aftercare, and no realistic prospect of the installer returning.

None of these appear on a comparison spreadsheet. All of them appear later.

Think in cost per unit generated, not cost per watt

A system is bought once and used for two decades or more. The number that matters is what each unit of generated energy ends up costing you across that period, which is decided by:

  • Actual output, which depends on design quality, orientation and shading — not just on installed capacity.
  • Degradation, which depends on module quality.
  • Downtime, which depends on whether faults are noticed and whether anyone comes back to fix them.
  • Maintenance, which is a real running cost and a smaller one than the losses it prevents.
  • Battery replacement, if storage is part of the system, because batteries are a consumable on a solar system’s timescale.

A system that costs 15% more and generates 10% more for twenty years, with someone answering the phone when it does not, is not the expensive option.

Costs that arrive after the invoice

Budget for these, because they are real and frequently unmentioned:

  • Net metering — the application, the bi-directional meter, and any charges the distribution company applies.
  • Structural or civil work discovered at survey — a roof that needs attention before an array goes on it.
  • Scheduled maintenance — inspection and cleaning at an interval set by your site, not by a brochure.
  • Battery replacement at the end of its cycle life, if you have storage.
  • Electrical remediation if the existing installation was left as found by a cheaper installer.

Questions worth asking about any price

  1. What exactly is included, and what is explicitly excluded?
  2. Which specific modules and inverter, by make and model?
  3. Is the mounting structure designed for this roof, and by whom?
  4. Is earthing designed, installed and tested — and is the test result recorded?
  5. What happens if generation is below expectation in month three?
  6. What is the payment schedule, and what deliverable does each stage correspond to?
  7. Who do I call in year four, and will they still be operating?

How to compare quotations

Compare scope, not totals. For each quotation ask: what equipment exactly, what mounting structure, is earthing included, is remedial electrical work included, is net metering included, and what happens if output is below expectation.

A quotation that cannot answer those is not cheaper. It is less complete.

Because the honest inputs are not available over the phone. A number given without seeing the roof, the distribution board or the load is a guess that gets revised later — usually upwards.

Is the cheapest quotation usually the problem?
